Mike Horn Pole2Pole expedition: North Pole Crossing

11 September 2019

Mike Horn teams up with Norwegian explorer Børge Ousland to pursue his Pole2Pole expedition in 2019.

Mike Horn has been pursuing his Pole2Pole expedition for the last 3 years. With his boat, Pangaea, he has set the goal to cross the globe from pole to pole by sea and land. First, he became the first man to complete a solo North-to-South crossing of Antarctica without support in 57 days, covering 5100km.

After his success, Mike sailed to places such as Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Malaysia to explore the areas and film his French TV show “Cap Horn”. Then, as he needed to do some repairs on the boat, he took the opportunity to attempt once again to summit K2.

By the end of August 2019, Mike came back from this trip and headed to Alaska to meet his team and prepare the final step of the Pole2Pole expedition: Crossing the Arctic Ocean via the North Pole.

Teaming up this time with Børge Ousland, Norwegian explorer and Mike’s long-term friend, he plans to reach Arctic land after making their way as far north as possible before being dropped off on the sea ice to start the traverse on foot and skis.

The team must sail through drifting ice sheets and icebergs in order to reach the Bering Strait and find a good departure point. Mike and Borge will then start their journey sailing through open water stretches, ice formations, facing harsh weather, polar bears and so on!

Their goal is to cross the North Pole and join the archipelago of Svalbard in Norway (1500km) before the winter season starts.

The route: Mike and his team will leave Alaska onboard Pangaea with the hopes of reaching as far as the 85°N latitude before being dropped off on the sea ice to start their traverse on foot and skis.

After leaving Nome (Alaska), where they prepared everything for the expedition, they unfortunately had to make an unexpected stop in Teller, as one of the Pangea’s water pumps broke. In order to succeed to sail though the polar circle, they need a fully functional boat.

As usual, Mike took its last-minute backlash the best as possible. He learned through his multiple experiences to move forward in life.

I change the things I can control, and I forget about the things I can’t".
Mike Horn

Waiting for the new pump, he reunited with an old friend living in Teller, Alaska.

On the 9th of September, Pangaea has been repaired and the team is starting to sail again in the direction of the Bering sea. More updates about his expedition will come soon.
