Chasing the Ghost

12 Dezember 2013

A short film made by Craig Bingham. Race Across America; two teams (USA and GB) come together forming "Allied Forces" to take on the challenge of cycling across America in less than 5days 5hours 5mins to set a new world record. With the goal to use the record and show their adventure as a platform to raise awareness and funding for Help for Heroes and Woundered Warriors. This is their story.

Words by Craig Bingham:

“For me, experiencing the world through endless second hand information isn't enough. If you want authenticity , you have to initiate it. During RAAM 2012 I followed the Strategic Lions for my first time photographing their epic adventure across the States in stills. This year I packed my camera , lenses and set out to not just capture stills, but also to make a film! We set out with the British cycling team "Strategic Lions" to join one of the United States cycling teams "4mil", coming together to form an 8 man relay team- "Allied Forces".”

From doing the race last year, there's no way you can possibly feel or experience RAAM without actually doing it. I think the most challenging thing about my job whether it be photography or film, is capturing what you see in the way you see it in your head. I really wanted to try and capture the atmosphere of the event. I wanted to capture the colour, the scenery, the sounds and folly, the rider’s personalities but mostly the human spirit- knitted all together tightly to give you a very detailed view through their window. And there are moments which just cannot be rehearsed or recreated. As a film maker I had to be on the lookout constantly, and not just capturing the riders, but also the landscapes which do literally disappear within seconds- the race is that fast. The smallest emotions and unnoticed details built up in a way which grabs the audiences full attention is what I am passionate about. I do my job purely for the viewing pleasure and reaction of others. Finding a way to immortalize imagery for others to view and replay again and again...you just can't beat it.”

“We'll never know our full potential unless we push ourselves to find it. It's this self-discovery that inevitably takes us to the wildest places on earth.”

“When it comes down to it, it's pretty simple, adventure is what you make it. And whether it's the travel, the discovery, or just the feeling of letting go....the only way we'll find out, it's to just get out there and do it.....enjoy the ride.”

Riders: Billy Edwards, Andy Watson, Wayne Dowd, John Tanner, Kevin Dawson, Keith Murray, Shawn Olin, Jonathan Puskas

The team broke the record finishing in 5 days, 3 hours and 45 minutes. A total distance of 2962 miles was covered in a successful effort to raise awareness for combat injured soldiers. A job well done, gentlemen. Thank you for making the SCOTT Family proud!
