Robin's Atlas Mountain Race-Winning Bike Check

16 February 2023

Get a detailed look at Robin Gemperle’s winning rig and setup for the Atlas Mountain Race.

In his own words:

The Spark RC EVO WC has been the perfect choice: Of course you wouldn’t need the 120mm of travel but the added comfort of the traction mode is something I would have desperately missed. In fact, I rode 95% of the time in traction or open mode. The possibility of locking out the system completely was often even just forgotten.

The integrated rear shock still allows for a big frame pack with plenty of space. A rather unexpected benefit of a system that already is highly suitable for long distances due to its natural protection inside the frame.

In order to fit the aero-bars I had to swap the Syncros Fraser integrated cockpit for a standard solution. Luckily the Syncros Fraser bar then offers plenty of oversized area to add clip-ons and Supernova light and battery in the desired position.

I couldn’t imagine racing an event like this without photochromic lenses: The SCOTT Sport Shield sunglasses was continuously sitting on my nose and adapting to whatever the time of day was. When riding for days you continuously need to adapt the fit of your shoes and helmet as these body parts swell up over time. Some years ago, I used to like laces for my shoes but compared to the Boa-System this really only wins the nostalgia competition.

Lots of riders still rely on mechanical shifting. I totally believe in AXS though. Two batteries were more than enough to bring me to the finish line and guaranteed effortless gear changes.

I relied on the Apidura Backcountry series combined with their hydration pack. I highly appreciate the high-quality zippers as I often fill the bags to an absolute maximum and then just pull on them like a maniac to close the packs.

All my kit came from Pedaled. Especially the Odyssey bibs are something I wouldn’t want to miss. Their leg pockets are far more important to me than normal jersey’s back pockets.

Versatility, comfort, adjustability and ease of use – the hard sweet spot to achieve to make sure your setup is up for the often harsh and unpredictable demands of an ultra-race like the AMR.
