DE GASPERI. JORNET. MOUNT KINABALU.

21 October 2011

De Gasperi. Jornet. Mount Kinabalu. On the island of Borneo in East Malaysia stands the 20th tallest mountain in the world by topographic prominence. October 22-23 welcome the 25th running of the Mt. Kinabalu International Climbathon, which features much of the Skyrunner World Series men’s and women’s elites on what has been described as the toughest mountain running race in the world. This year coincides with the biannual Skyrunner SuperCup, an event held every two years as the final event of the year when they run the European Championships. The men’s and women’s winners each receive $10,000 but perhaps more importantly the prestigious Skyrunner Super Cup, designating “the champion of champions.” Italian and Scott Athlete Marco De Gasperi is the course record holder. He claimed this incredible feat in 2010 with a stunning 2h 33’56”, bettering his winning time from 2004. He will certainly have to contend with Spain’s Kilian Jornet, the winner here in 2007 and 2009. These two have had some great battles already this year, with Jornet taking the tape at Giir di Mont and De Gasperi settling the score with his own personal best at Sierre Zinal a month later. This should be a fantastic battle between two of the sport’s best pure legendary vertical specialists. All fingers crossed for Marco! Vai, Marco...
