GP14: NETHERLANDS

Simpson wins in Assen

Traditionally, the home of World Superbike and MotoGP events, the Dutch facility of Assen welcomed the Motocross World Championship this weekend for the first time. On a white sandy track Shaun Simpson grabbed his second GP win of the season, while Belgium Brent Van Doninck celebrated his first ever MX2 podium.

There are still two GP’s to go before the end of this 2015 season, but the new MXGP World Champion is already crowned as Frenchman Romain Febvre scored enough points on Sunday to secure his first ever World title. The 24 years old Frenchman placed fifth and first in the race respectively, to finish second overall behind SCOTT rider, Shaun Simpson. Simpson repeats his great performance from Lommel, by winning the Grand Prix with a win and a third position on his factory KTM. “This morning I had a good lap time and a good feeling, and in the first race I was able to come back from a bad start and a small crash to win. The bike was working really well and the suspension was very good, we made a few small changes for the second race and the track was a lot different, smoother and easier. I used a lot of energy in the first race, but overall it was nice to win the GP,” said Simpson who is now fourth in the World Championship.

The MX2 class has a new leader as Slovenian Tim Gajser won this sandy race, following Pauls Jonass crash at the start of the second heat. This victory is enough for him to move forward with the red plate. Jonass recovered to thirteenth but lost his position as the leader of the series and will go into the last two events (Mexico and USA) with a deficit of thirteen points. Gajser winner, and Max Anstie second dominated the race, and for the third position Belgians Brent Van Doninck and Julien Lieber battled during both races. Lieber got a best classification in the first race with a third position, but Van Doninck was more consistent with a fourth place in each race, while Julien finished sixth in the second heat and missed the podium.

The series will be “make or break” next weekend, before the two flyaway events and later the Motocross of Nations in Ernée (France).
