Review: World Cup ready hardtail

Mountain Bike Action

Scott’s CR1 carbon fiber hardtail feels silly light. The first time you ride it, you simply can’t believe that a bike this lightweight will hold up to the rigors of mountain biking.

The Limited version of the Scale has caliper brakes, and the rest of the line uses disc stoppers. A Fox F100X inertia-valve fork makes this rigid-pedaling chassis even more of an outstanding climber. The Scale’s razor-sharp handling is what one would expect from a European racing hardtail, but it has enough stability in reserve to remain composed when the road turns ugly. After four hours of semi-technical descending, we still had enough go-power left to enjoy the ride. There is no doubt that the Scale’s sub 20 pound weight is its major selling pint, but it has the handling and the strength to back up its girlish figure.

SCOTT SCALE HIGH POINTS
Light enough to be any cross-country racer’s secret weapon, it handles better than most pro hardtails.

SCOTT SCALE LOW POINTS
It makes you wish that a dual-suspension bike could be made as lightweight as the Scale.
