GP5 MOTOCROSS: BULGARIA

Arnaud Tonus still leads the MX2 class

Swiss rider, Arnaud Tonus defends his lead in the MX2 Motocross World Championship this weekend in Sevlievo (Bulgaria). His second place finish was enough to keep the red plate for another event. Fourth in the MXGP class, Clement Desalle remains runner up in the standings.

In both races Arnaud Tonus was a strong contender for reigning World Champion Jeffrey Herlings, who won the Grand Prix. Tonus was leading most of the opening race but made a small mistake, enough for his rival to take over the lead and eventually the victory. In the second moto he pressured the Dutchman, who ended up winning by only four seconds.

It was a good GP for me. Already on Saturday I had a good qualifying race and had fun on the bike. I was disappointed with my little crash while I was leading the first race, but it was good to see that I can fight with Jeffrey and I learned a lot in this moto. In the second race I gave everything to catch Herlings; we were very close but I made a few small mistakes and he won it. Finishing second twice is a good result and I still have the red plate. Now, I will work in the sand; I love riding there and I will go to Valkenswaard determined to win this GP,” said Arnaud. Jordi Tixier didn’t let last weekend’s wrist and hand injuries stop him from enjoying the a third place podium celebration, his best performance so far.

As the rain poured down during the second MX2 race, the track ended up wet and slippery for the second MXGP. Fifth in the first heat, Clement Desalle felt more comfortable and battled for a podium result. Third in the race, he missed the final podium by a few points. He remains runner up in the standings but fellow countryman Jeremy Van Horebeek follows closely, finishing third in the event behind Cairoli and Paulin.
