The Tyrolean village of Fieberbrunn Austria hosted the last stage of the Swatch Freeride World Tour before the finals in Verbier, Switzerland. With fantastic freeriding conditions, fresh powder, and beautiful blue skies, riders were fired-up to give the mountain their best shot and attempt to secure a place in the finals.
Drew Tabke (USA) won the contest with a mix of high-level big mountain skiing and smooth freestyle tricks. SCOTT team rider Kevin Guri (FRA) charged into second place with a huge double air and screaming-fast line. The Swedish bullet Reine Barkered fired a high-speed line with stomped airs bringing him to a 3rd place finish. Last year's winner Stefan Häusl (AUT) jumped two high cliffs, riding very fast and fluid, to secure fifth place. With his solid performance, he qualified for the FWT final in Verbier (CH). The winner of the Freeride Juniors in 2011, Fabian Lentsch (AUT), earned a wildcard for Fieberbrunn and participated for the first time in an elite event. Lentsch showed a solid run and finished in 16th position.
On the girls' side, Eva Walkner (AUT) showed a powerful full-throttle line and big stomped airs. The Swede Christine Hargin (SWE) kept her composure and stayed on her feet for a smooth run, putting her in second place. Coming in third place, Janina Kuzma (NZL) skied powerfully with several stomped airs on a creative and aesthetic line. Unfortunately, it wasn’t the day of the two SCOTT riders Jacklyn Paaso and Lorraine Huber, who ended up on the last two ranks. Due to a shoulder injury which Jackie sustained at the Red Bull Gold Rush, she wasn’t able to convince the judges and fell back to the 3rd rank in the overall ranking. Lorraine showed a fast and clean run but due to a fall in the last section, her score turned out accordingly low.
The girl snowboarders put on an amazing show with Liz Kirstoferitsch (AUT) standing on top of the podium. The SCOTT ski guide showed an innovative line that started with switch riding and came around with a half-cab and some solid airs. After the competition, Liz quoted: “I was really nervous before the event but now that I skied my line and won, the stress is gone.”
The junior skiers and snowboarders competing in the Freeride Juniors by Dakine got a chance to go big and showed their skills on the 250m Seenieder face, high above the village of Fieberbrunn, Austria. Maximilian Hofer (AUT), 16 year old SCOTT rider, scored 8.5 and won silver.
All in all the tour stop in Fieberbrunn was a successful contest for our SCOTT riders. We are looking forward to the finals in Verbier!
