KC Deane

Scott Athlete

KC Deane

Age: 29

Hometown: Sandpoint, ID

Co-sponsors: Enve Composites, Eddie Bauer, Contour, Dissent Labs, Arcade Belts

Career highlights: Top 250 Red Bull Illume photo, photos featured in Bike Magazine, Dirt, Freehub, and others. Red Bull Rampage competitor 2014

Off season or other activities: Off season for biking is "on-season" for skiing which is what I do when I’m not biking. My big line skiing takes up most of the winter for me. I had a great trip to Japan this last winter.

Born and raised in Sandpoint, Idaho, KC Deane grew up skiing and enjoying the outdoors. He is a professional skier and a mountain biker currently residing in Bellingham, WA.

KC is relatively new to the world of freeride. He grew up racing XC mountain bikes as a teenager, but got out of riding and pursued skiing as a primary focus. Since then, he traveled the world skiing, filming and shooting. As a SCOTT snowsports rider, he has been featured in many ski movies, magazines and publications. It wasn’t until 2012 that KC picked up the mountain bike again. Watching freeride competitions including RedBull Rampage, he wanted to bring biking back into his life and felt that his big mountain skiing could translate into big mountain biking. KC bought his first bike and set his goals high, and the rest is history.

KC qualified for RedBull Rampage in 2014 and teamed up with fellow SCOTT rider Paul Bas on a fearsome line that no other competitors touched. The story of their effort was documented in a story for Dirt Rag magazine. Going into 2015, KC looks to maintain his presence as one of the sport’s up and coming big-line riders, both on snow and on dirt.

How and when did you start skiing, how has it evolved ever since, and what got you into freeskiing?

I started skiing when I was 3 years old. When I saw guys doing tricks and riding the park I decided, "this is awesome.  I want to do this," and started hitting jumps and rails.

Was there any particular experience that made you consider pursue skiing professionally?

I would say every day I went and skied a powder day growing up.  I wanted to be able to do that all the time, and becoming a pro skier allowed me to do just that.

Who were/are your idols on and off the hill?

My dad is one of the main ones.  Some of the guys I looked up to when I was coming up in skiing were guys like Pep, Abma, Pollard, Mahre, and Seth Morrison.

What does skiing mean to you personally?

It means different things on different days...sometimes it's an escape, or work, or just a way to have fun, but more than anything it's just what I love to do.

Do you have any specific goals for your skiing in your future?

Film with a big film company and put together a solid segment.  And push my skiing every year.

What aspect of skiing thrills you the most?

Skiing pow and hitting big jumps or drops.

In what conditions and what terrain do you most enjoy riding?

Any time I am in the mountains I'm pretty stoked.  Any day that the snow is deep!

Any activities that aren't ski related?

I am really into mountain biking and surfing.  Some day soon I'll start racing motocross again.

How do you manage to combine family/friends and job?

That's a tough one, always being gone in the winter is hard.  Especially being out of the States for weeks at a time.  But just keep in touch the best you can, and everyone realizes that when spring rolls around I'll be back haha.
