Winter is here, the days are shorter and the motivation is dwindling, we all know the feeling. But as the coldest months approach, the SCOTT Running Team is here to share their tried-and-tested training tips to help you power through and keep stacking up the kilometers.

1. THE 10 MINUTE RULE

“My top tip for winter running? Just get out the door and commit to 10 minutes. Telling yourself it’s only 10 minutes makes it easier to start—and of course, you’ll end up running much longer. If you aim for 2 hours in the cold and dark, it’s easy to skip it altogether – but telling yourself it’s just a quick 10 minutes? Works every time!” Iris Pessey, SCOTT Athlete

2. LAYER UP

“To stay motivated, I like to set goals for the coming summer season. These don’t necessarily have to be race goals or new PBs. For me, it’s more about finding projects that are fun and memorable - ones that I might still look back on years from now. Whether it’s small adventures in new places or routes that no one else has done quite the same way, each experience is unique. Of course, I’m always excited to test myself against others at the start line as well!” Armin Zorn, SCOTT Ambassador

3. SNOW 101

“I train for trail running year-round, and I love running on snow. My first, very important tip is to stick to well-packed trails or light snow coverage. Anything deeper can be too exhausting and inefficient. Next up - I rely on my Supertrac RC2 for excellent grip. Finally, avoid sloped paths or narrow trails where you might risk slipping. And, of course, don’t forget your gloves and hat/headband—they’re essential for staying warm in the cold.” Anne-Lise Rousset, SCOTT Athlete

4. ADJUST YOUR MINDSET

“Running through the cold and dark season is no easy feat—but that’s exactly why it’s a powerful advantage! Every run you commit to is one more step ahead of those who stayed on the couch, especially when it’s already dark outside. Don’t let the lack of light get you down - with the right headlamp designed for running, you can stay safe, stay seen, and stay one step ahead of your competition. Let’s make every winter run count!” Seb Neef, SCOTT Ambassador

“Every run you commit to this winter gets you a step ahead of those who stayed on the couch.”

5. START SLOWLY

“Remember, the season is a long way off and it’s cold outside! When it’s cold, our muscles, joints, and tendons need a little extra care to warm up properly. Adjusting your training based on weather conditions—like icy paths—or how you're feeling, such as extra fatigue, is perfectly fine. Remember, your key race goals are likely still a while off, so skipping a few kilometers now won’t derail your progress, but pushing too hard and risking injury certainly could!” Fred Tranchand, SCOTT Athlete

“Take it slowly, the season is still a long way off - Skipping a few kilometers now won’t derail your progress.”
