Sonya Looney wins 450km La Leyenda stage race in Columbia

09 August 2017

SCOTT rider Sonya Looney won La Leyenda Del Dorado, Colombia’s premier multi-stage mountain bike race. She and her partner, SCOTT rider Amy McDougall from South Africa, bested top riders from around the world, including the teams lead by Esther Suss and Catharine Williamson. As a UCI accredited event, the race attracted top talent from around the world.

“It was one of the most amazing experiences,” said Sonya. “There were thousands of people at the finish line each day, and it was on ESPN Latin America. You felt like a real sports celebrity!”

Starting in the mountain city of Manizales, the race covered 7 stages around the department of Caldas, including over 450km with more than 16,000m of ascent, and returning to Manizales for the finish.

“The climbs were INSANE,” continued Sonya. “Up to four hours long and the hardest, steepest climbs I’ve ever seen. Four of the stages were 60 miles long with over 12,000 feet of climbing. We even went up to 13,500 feet near a volcano!”
