For the first time in the 5-year history of Team ORICA-GreenEDGE, a rider has made it onto the podium of a Grand Tour. This is the result of a concious build-up of young talents with abilities to join the club of the best 3-week stage race contenders. It confirms the strategy of the Australian Team which has always had a strong emphasis on talented young riders on their roster.
Smart Tactics and a Strong Unit
The team's success at the Giro d'Italia is a result of smart tactics and a team that forms a unit like no other. Chavez found himself perfectly protected and positioned during the 3 weeks of racing. He didn't crash and made it safely through the finals of the most hectic stages. At the same time, he rode intelligently, conserved energy whenever possible and put the cards on the table in the right moments.
A Rider to Watch for the Future
After finishing fifth at last years Vuelta à Espagna and carrying the leader's jersey for several days, Chavez' second place finish at the Giro d'Italia proves that he's a rider to watch for upcoming Grand Tours. While his major strength is climbing, he also improved his time trial abilities. Beyond that, he's showed stunning technical skills during the descents of the Giro.
