Flora Duffy Wins XTERRA World Championships

24 十月 2016
After heavy rainfalls leading into the race, the participants of the 2016 XTERRA World Championships on Maui faced challenging conditions on the course. The 1.5 kilometer swim in the Pacific Ocean was demanding due to the high waves rolling in on the beach of Kapalua. Duffy, who's known as a front-pack swimmer, lead out the swim and exited the rough waters with an advantage of over 1.3 minutes on the second placed athlete in the women's championship race. Heavy rain had turned the bike course into a muddy mess. Despite the difficult conditions, Duffy extended her lead on the bike to almost 5 minutes. "I've never raced in such difficult conditions," Duffy said after the race. "The mud stuck to the bike like glue and I was afraid the gears wouldn't work anymore at some point but eventually all the athletes were struggling with the same issues." Even the muddy trails on the closing 10 kilometer trail run couldn't stop Flora from taking her third XTERRA World Championship title in a row. "Todays race was certainly an adventure." Flora commented on the conditions throughout the entire race. With her victory on Maui, Duffy finished off a breakthrough season that saw her consistently placing in the top 5 of the World Triathlon Series, winning the race in Stockholm, placing 8th at the Olympic Games and winning the WTS Series which is considered the World Championships in Olympic Distance Triathlon. "It's very special to win a third world title here. I feel like all the weight has now been lifted off my shoulders and I can go on holiday mode," Duffy said.
