MOTOCROSS MXGP OF BELGIUM 2016
GP14: BELGIUM (Lommel) - The European 250 title for Thomas Kjer Olsen
Danish Thomas Kjer Olsen claimed this weekend in Lommel (Belgium) the European 250 title, during the penultimate round of the series before Switzerland next Sunday. In the MX2 Grand Prix, Bulgarian Petar Petrov got his first podium of the season.Consistent all season as he never missed one race podium and won three round of the series, Thomas Kjer Olsen did again two clever races in the deep sand of Lommel. Twice runner up he secures definitively his title as his main rival Darian Sanayei finished fourth overall and can’t beat him next weekend during the final round of the Championship.
Contender for the final win in both races, Dylan Ferrandis was unfortunate as he didn’t finish the first heat due to a mechanical failure. The winner of the Czech Grand Prix got a podium result in the second heat with a third position. Team mate Petar Petrov did his best race of the season with a strong second position in the qualifying race, another second place during the first moto and a Grand Prix podium with a third overall. “We finally got this podium, but it was a tough day. I felt good all weekend. In the first race I had a good start, pushed really hard and got the lead for two laps; it was great to lead the race but that was also a new experience for me. In the second moto my start was not quite as good, and then I hurt my shoulder; the track was really brutal. In the last few laps I pushed again as Paturel was not far behind me; I knew that if he passed me the podium was gone so I had to push and we manage to get it! Now I’m focused on the Swiss GP next weekend,” said the Bulgarian who got his first podium of the season.
In the MXGP class none of the race winners was able to avoid some crashed this weekend, and it’s local rider Kevin Strijbos who won the GP with two third positions. Nagl and Gajser both won one race and crashed in the other one, as well as the Scott Athletes; Shaun Simpson got a strong second position in race one and crashed in the next one, as well as Clement Desalle who got a fourth and a tenth. Jordi Tixier was even more unfortunate with crashes in both races and a sixteenth overall.
The World Championship will continue next week at a new venue in Frauenfeld (Switzerland).
