SCOTT UK's Keith Murray Rides Race Across America

13 June 2012

Departing Saturday 16th June 2012, Keith Murray, SCOTT UK Area Manager and top ranking UK Time Trailist will be competing in a team of 8 in the world famous RACE ACROSS AMERICA cycle race!

Teaming up with other elite cyclists, including former triple National Road Champion & Olympian John Tanner & Time Trial Legend Kev Dawson as the “Strategic Lions Cycling Team” they will be riding SCOTT bikes including the SCOTT Plasma TT and CR1 to take on this epic route.

 RAAM

RAAM is 30% longer than the Tour de France, with a route stretching over 3000 miles. Starting in California and ending in Maryland, the Strategic Lions will cross 14 states and climb over 100,000 feet.

Typically in the team race, riders will cross the country in 6 to 9 days; averaging 350 to over 500 miles per day! However they don’t intend just to win the race. The current team record stands at 5 days 9 hours and three minutes, which the team is hoping to beat, to set a new World Record.

We will ride in a relay format and race 24 hours a day - in RAAM, once the clock starts on the west coast, it doesn't stop until each racer reaches the finish line on the east coast. We race 24 hours a day.

The Deputy Prime Minister met members of the Team Strategic Lions at Whitehall’s Admiralty House on Friday 1st June, where he commended them for their steely determination and tireless fundraising efforts and hoped they reached their full potential in the mammoth journey across America.

“For these lads, the bike is just the beginning. They’ve toiled and trained tirelessly to raise cash for brave British troops who’ve been wounded fighting for our country and the freedom of others. Not only have they trained for their own 3,000 mile challenge, but they’ve mentored a team of injured ex-forces veterans too. I wish them all the best of luck in this year’s race.”

Jon Paul Nevin, Crew Chief of the Help for Heroes RAAM team says:

“The support from Team Strategic Lions has been absolutely instrumental in our preparations for the Race Across America. They have gone above and beyond in doing their bit and we wish them every success as they take on America.”
