Gain that SPLIT second advantage

09 March 2012

The all-new Scott Split AERO helmet.

GreenEDGE earned its first European win in convincing fashion as it stormed to team time trial victory on the opening stage of Tirreno-Adriatico. GreenEDGE covered the 16.9 kilometer course in 18:41, 17 seconds faster than RadioShack-Nissan Trek and Garmin-Barracuda who were separated by fractions of a second in second and third. The team was using the all new aero helmet develop by SCOTT Sports.

Helmet modeling

SCOTT engineers worked with Team GreenEDGE to determine a clear set of objectives when designing the new Split Aero helmet. The Team asked for a helmet with the lowest drag coefficient possible, an advanced optical solution, a fully integrated visor, a dynamic ventilation system, and of course an adjustable, comfortable fit.

Aero tunnel

Extensive wind tunnel testing was carried out with the GreenEDGE, pro team to optimize the helmet’s shape with regard to both aerodynamics and rider integration. Wind tunnel testing provided more holistic, real world data for each design iteration and ensured that the final Split shape achieved its class leading performance. During this process a seamlessly integrated ‘clip in’ optical shield, which further improves the aerodynamics of the overall design, was also developed.
