Last year, I took part in the Transcontinental Race, an unsupported race from Geraardsbergen (Belgium) to Istanbul (Turkey). There was no set route. There were no stages. Only four checkpoints in France, Italy, Croatia and Montenegro. In between, the 180 participants were free to choose when to stop and which roads to ride.

As an U23 rider Lachlan Morton was touted as the "next big thing" in Australian cycling and no-one batted an eyelid when he secured a contract with World Tour team Garmin-Sharp at the start of 2013. After two years at the highest level of racing, Lachlan was struggling to find the motivation to deliver on his early promise and eventually walked away from the sport.
