When it comes to milestones, we know a thing or two. Rainbow stripes? We’ve had plenty. Spring classics? Same story. Gold medals? Yup, have a couple of those as well. This year we turn 60, though, and in those 60 years there has been one milestone that has eluded us – the Grand Tour. This year, it seems, it shall elude us no more. We couldn’t be happier- what a birthday gift for the big 6-0. Thank you, Simon. Thank you, Mitchelton-SCOTT. Time to blow the candles out, and start making our next wishes.
“Winning monuments in road cycling like Milan San Remo or Paris Roubaix is already something, but to win a Grand Tour is in a league of its own. Such a feat is of course great for brand visibility, but it goes far beyond that. More importantly, it provides phenomenal motivation for every employee at SCOTT to keep doing what they do in order to help athletes achieve the greatest of goals. It makes us proud as a company, and gives us all the motivation to keep on working and applying out “NO SHORTCUTS” approach to day to day life.”
- Pascal Ducrot, Vice President at SCOTT Sports
The Victor – Simon Yates
Simon Yates joined Mitchelton-SCOTT back in 2014. He became a professional with the team, and never looked back. Having gotten stronger and stronger every year, his training and racing education with the team has led to this – winning the 2018 Vuelta a España. While this is an individual title, this race has certainly been a team Victory. Every stage was meticulously planned, placing each member of the team in the right place at the right time in order to support Simon to the fullest. Simon becomes the second British Citizen to win the Vuelta, and does so in only his third appearance at the three-week race.
“It feels great. Really unbelievable, I think it’s still sinking in. I have no words, it’s just really unbelievable. I like to race on my instinct and I hope that I continue to do so and achieve more big results like today at the Vuelta a Espana. The day I won on stage 14 is probably my favourite moment from the race, getting your hands in the air, there’s no feeling like winning a bike race and that will hold a special place, but also the first stage in Andorra. I came back from real heartbreak from the Giro d’Italia and I am still in shock that I’ve managed to pull it off and it will take a while for it to sink in just what we’ve accomplished. I get really nervous up on the stage, but it was a very special moment that I will cherish forever.”
