Monika Führholz (SUI) wins the European Championship in mountain running

11 July 2012
Just two weeks after her victory at the Gamperney mountain race in Switzerland, Monika Führholz, sponsored by SCOTT, delivered an outstanding race result at the European Championship in Denizli- Pamukkale (TUR).
“The race directly started as a sprint right from the beginning. Incredible, because after a few minutes I was already in the last third of the field.” The course was two laps of a 8.3 km trail with an altitude of 445 meters. Monika started to assert her dominance at the very first ascent and gradually started to overtake the leading runners only to be overtaken by three competitors on the descent. The race would really start on the second lap on the ascent and this was where Monika’s strength of running came through. Monika increased the pace at the beginning of the second climb and by the top had a lead of nearly one minute. This was enough to enable her to keep her strong position and finish nine seconds ahead of Nadeschda Leschtschinskaja (Russia) who came in 2nd.
This was the first international race for the 28 year old Monika Führholz in the national vest of Switzerland. What a fantastic debut race and we congratulate Monika on this outstanding result.
Scott wishes Monica every success at the World Championship in mountain running in September in Italy.
