 The MXGP season is over

The eighteenth and final round of the FIM Motocross World Championship took place at Glen Helen (California) and celebrates a new MX2 World Champion. Slovenian Tim Gajser finally beats Latvian Pauls Jonass, to become the first ever World Champion for this country.

It has been a hot, rough and exciting final round of the series, just a week before the Motocross of Nations, which will take place in Ernée (France) this coming weekend. American riders dominated their home GP in the MX2 class, but lost the overall win in the MXGP class, as Romain Febvre beats them to end his fantastic season with another GP win.Fourth in the standings of the MXGP class, Shaun Simpson was unlucky as he was involved in a first corner pile up and ended his weekend after a few meters on Sunday. Luckily the Scottish rider will be fit for the MX of Nations, and even without taking part in the second race secured fourth place in the standings. “This crash could have been a lot worse! I’m taking the positives away and hope to heal up well and be ready for the ‘Nations’ next weekend to do the best job I can for team GB. Overall it’s been a fantastic year; my goal was top five so a fourth has exceeded that expectation. In the second part of the season I really felt like I was one of the main guys and it was nice to be up front getting podiums. I also felt I was coming to the races to win, not just get top fives,” said Shaun after the race. Febvre won the GP with two consistent races (1/2), beating Americans Josh Grant (3/1) and Cooper Webb (2/3).

In the MX2 class young Americans Jessy Nelson and Shane McElrath took advantage of their home track and hot conditions to dominate the races. Swiss Valentin Guillod was the best European with a third overall; teammate Julien Lieber didn’t start the second race, as he suffered a hip injury. Neither Thomas Covington nor Petar Petrov were successful in the final round, as bad starts and some mistakes resulted in them finishing in eleventh and thirteenth respectively.The MX of Nations, National team race, will see thirty-five teams behind the gate in Ernée (France) next weekend. France, Great Britain and USA will be the favourites of this great competition.
