Sage Canaday wins Tarawera Ultramarathon

18 March 2013

Sage Canaday wore the SCOTT T2 Kinabalu across the finish line to become the 2013 Tarawera Ultramarathon Champion.  No one could match Canaday's move at 20km through the 100km race, nor could they overcome his 20+ minute lead when he faltered over the final 30km.

Canaday made his move at mile 12.5 miles into the 63-mile race.  Sage built his lead until around mile 52 when he started to feel dehydrated and nauseous.  "It's probably a good thing I didn't know Tim was finishing really strong in the final 20km of the race.  In the end, I had very good reason to be glancing over my shoulder, as he had dramatically reduced the gap between us to a mere 3 minutes."

Sage plans to compete in more 50km trail and mountain races as preparation for the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials in the marathon.  "I don't believe that 100-mile training would be a productive step towards that goal as 100 miles is a totally different beast," remarked Canaday.

SCOTT would like to congratulate Sage on his 2013 Tarawera Ultramarathon Champion title.
