MOTOCROSS MXGP OF LEON 2014

19 September 2014

GP of Mexico

Tixier clinches the MX2 World Title

Mexico hosted the last GP of the season this weekend, and it was one of the most epics final in the history of Motocross! Coming back to the last GP only two months after breaking his leg, reigning World Champion Jeffrey Herlings did his best to defend his 26 points lead, but Jordi Tixier was stronger than ever and clinched the title with his second GP win of the season.

Winner of the MX2 qualifying race on Saturday, Jordi Tixier showed his rivals that he was ready for the final round, and confirmed on Sunday with a win in the opening race. A collision with another rider while leading the second heat changed his plans, and the Frenchman had to recover from a tenth position; coming back to third by the end of the race, while Herlings scored a tenth position, Tixier beats his teammate by four points to become the new MX2 World Champion. "In my head I still can't believe it. After I crashed in the first lap of the second moto I thought the championship was over and I tried to give it everything. Then when I came third my mechanic told me that it was OK, and when I crossed the finish line I thought, 'I did it' and its really nice to win like this. I was really fast on the track, I caught almost everyone and I rode aggressive. I want to dedicate this win to my young brother Leo who had a bike accident last week, and want to thank all the partners and people who support me," said Tixier after the podium ceremony. Third of the opening MX2 race Dylan Ferrandis crashed and retired with a painful ankle during the second race, while Arnaud Tonus finished his last MX2 GP in fifth position.

Sick, Steven Frossard secured with an eighth position the final fifth place in the World championship, while Tommy Searle scored a sixth overall in this last GP of the seasons. Most of the riders will now represent their country in two weeks time at the Motocross of Nations, organised in Kegums (Latvia).
