Desco and De Gasperi excel at Zegama

17 May 2014

For ten years, Zegama-Aizkorri has been a permanent fixture on the Skyrunner® World Series. It is a race of legends, myth, mud and mayhem and the 2014 edition was no exception.  After all, Zegama is Zegama!

SCOTT Sports, partnering with the 2014 Skyrunner® World Series, immediately made their mark in the first races of the season with American Jodee Adams-Moore placing 6th and Spaniard Pablo Villa 9th in the iconic Transvulcania Ultramarathon, and Italian Elisa Desco winning the new Vertical Kilometer® outright.

In the first Sky Series race at Zegama, SCOTT Sports is again hitting the headlines with dynamic duo, Elisa Desco and Marco De Gasperi, who both took podium positions at Zegama in the deepest field to date.

Marco De Gasperi needs no introduction in the world of Skyrunning and despite less than favorable conditions, the Italian legend once again produced a world-class performance to take 2nd place behind an unstoppable Kilian Jornet. Marco’s pressure on the Catalan was so great, that Kilian was pushed hard to the finish, breaking the nine-year old course record by almost 6 minutes. To add perspective, the top four men all ran faster than the 2005 time.

Elisa’s performance here was no less, competing in the lead pack with World Champions, Stevie Kremer and Emelie Forsberg and pushed by Kasie Enman and Maite Mayora. She held strong to the end where she placed second behind Stevie.

Marco and Elisa were joined by teammates, Switzerland’s Stephan Wenk and Pablo Villa, just two weeks after his excellent Transvulcania performance. However, on the day, fatigue hit and Pablo was forced to retire. Stephan Wenk went on to produce a stellar performance and placed 31st overall in this highly competitive field.

The Skyrunner® World Series moves on to Val d’Isère in France in July with another double venue featuring the historic KM Face de Bellevarde and the spectacular 65 km Ice-Trail.

Strong products and outstanding performances are synonymous with a strong brand and the continued success and incredible results in conjunction with the Skyrunner® World Series will no doubt continue to confirm SCOTT Running’s credibility and integrity within the market.
