Athlete talk

What is your all-time favourite riding destination?

I really fell in love with the Aosta Valley. The riding in this area is just amazing - high alpine trails combined with great Italian lifestyle and food. We recently opened up “The Place” in Aosta, which is a bike shop, bar and restaurant, and above all a meeting point for mountain bikers. Check it out! But of course there are more places I like to ride. Another very special place is Liguria. I came to Finale Ligure in 2004, that was the beginning of the shuttle era. It was like Helibiking for me. There was this guy Fabrizio with a van and a trailer, and they would pick you up and bring you up the mountain again. And the trails were superb. A whole new experience at that time. Hey, that’s only 15 years ago. Look where we have gotten to now! Meanwhile lots of places close by started working on trails, and that created a whole new bike area. Also my friends in Tuscany do a really good job in developing trail networks.

The skiresorts in the Alps see a bright future in mountain biking as well. If I have to choose an alpine bike destination, I would go to Dolomiti Paganella, Arosa Lenzerheide or to Bikepark Serfaus Fiss Ladis. They all feature a good variety of trails, and a good mixture of natural and bikepark tracks.

At home I like to ride my eRide, because the mountains around Garmisch Partenkirchen are steep and its perfect for the electric bike. You can reach the summit, enjoy the view, and then when the mountain is quiet and nobody is there anymore, you can descend on technical alpine trails.

What "No Shortcuts" means to you

Stay focused and do it right! There is always a way to make it work.

What do you get up to when you’re not doing bikes?

I love skiing, so I take some time off from biking to hunt the powder. I really got into skitouring. It's so good to be out in the mountains. Besides that I am into motos and surfing. Its just hard to get in the time. We need a year that has 24 months, so we have more time for all the good stuff out there!

Outside of cycling, where do you draw inspiration from?

There are lots of inspiriations; I like music, cooking and movies. .I actually would love to do a food truck, with really authentic Mexican food, you never know… I just got a wood fired Pizza Oven and got into that. Making the dough, using the right flour, trying to make Napoli Style Pizza..it isn’t that easy, but its fun.  But to tell you the truth, travelling is the real inspiration. Experiencing new cultures, talking to the locals, eating different food, getting a different outlook on life, this is what really keeps me going.

You’re stranded on a desert island. What three things would you want with you?

Surfboard in case it has waves, music for the good vibes, and of course a photo of Karen ❤️  and the kids.

If you could put up a billboard to be seen by countless people every day, what would you put on it?

Live that moment, don´t worry about the past or the future, just be there. It won´t be forever anyway.
