Tragic Bike Fire Attack Hopefully Won't Dampen Fundraising Efforts
24 April 2012
On Saturday 24th March two keen riders and fundraisers, Liam and Paul, took part in the challenge to bike ride the 90 mile route from Leeds to Blackpool in aid of raising money for Macmillian Cancer Support. They have so far raised thousands of pounds over the past years completing different sporting events to raise money for several cancer charities. However, tragedy struck and the two riders were left devastated, with their car and bikes left in ruins….
“We parked the car in East Topping Street, secure pay & display council car park located near the North Pier and after securing both our bikes to my car, I sought advised from a nearby council officer regarding the safety of leaving the bikes, as we wanted to take our daughters both ages 1 to the beach." The guys Explained "We were told they’d be fine…
We returned back to the cars at 2.30pm, only to our horror to see the police and fire service surrounding my car, as thugs had set fire to both bikes and the rear of the car! A local shop owner was first on the scene, trying to attack the flames with a fire extinguisher. The flames were caught on CCTV, which alerted the emergency services. Unfortunately the criminals were not visual on CCTV and the crime is currently under investigation.
Soon though, it was apparent the extent of the damage, both bikes & back of my car was ruined.
After taking time off work, training every day, spending significant money on bikes and equipment together with raising thousands of pounds to help other people, we have now been hit to pay thousands pounds in damages...”
The two contacted SCOTT Sports UK and on hearing this awful story, we were keen to help them to complete their journey to fundraise with two SCOTT Aspect bikes to do. We wish them all the very best in their future fundraising challenges for the year.
