Re-Source by Scott

WE BELIEVE IN DOING THINGS
THE RIGHT WAY AND
FOR THE RIGHT REASONS.

We are committed to improving the impacts of our products and business practices, preserving the environment for future generations and stimulating positive change in our communities.

RE-SOURCE BY SCOTT was put in place to develop and promote Corporate Responsibility. This program focusses on three key pillars: People, Product and Planet.

PEOPLE

We consider that all people involved in our value chain should be treated fairly with dignity and respect.

LIFE AT SCOTT HQ

At SCOTT, we live and breathe sports. Employees are offered a wide variety of benefits when it comes to doing sports and spending time outside. Our new headquarters offers a sports facility, and employees are encouraged to take long breaks at lunch to enable them to go ride, run, climb, swim or workout at our staff gym. As well as creating a sense of community amongst our employees, the ability to use and play with the equipment we develop and design allows us to make even better products for our customers.

To keep all our employees healthy and ready for action, our new headquarters is equipped with a state-of-the-art kitchen that produces over 200 meals a day. The meals are subsidised by the company and there is always a vegetarian option and a wide variety of salads or soups.

The SCOTT community offers many opportunities for our employees to share experiences and build lasting relationships.

UCI SOLIDARITY PROGRAM

For over a decade, we have partnered with the World Cycling Centre (WCC) based in Switzerland and their UCI Solidarity Program. The WCC is an elite coaching and training centre that offers athletes and federations that may lack the resources a platform for them to get invaluable experience to compete. We provide mountain bikes, road bikes as well as technical expertise to train mechanics. Our bikes are given out to federations around the world under the UCI Solidarity Program. In the last year, we have worked on developing a unique edition bike with the program’s colors. We were also proud to see that some of our bikes were ridden at the 2021 Tokyo Olympic Games. We are proud to support the development of athletes and to give them the opportunity to pursue their dreams through sports.

WORLD BICYCLE RELIEF

Since 2021, we have been supporting World Bicycle Relief. For millions of people around the world, and especially girls, distance is a barrier to attending school, receiving healthcare and delivering goods to markets. World Bicycle Relief’s mission is to mobilize people through the Power of Bicycles, and they are committed to helping people conquer the challenge of distance, achieve independence and thrive.

In 2022 in partnership with SCOTT SRAM MTB Team, SRAM and VIPrize, our community raised 136’000€ for World Bicycle Relief. Two lucky winners had the opportunity to meet the SCOTT SRAM team at a World Cup event and went home with a one of a kind WBR x SCOTT bike all decked out with components from SRAM. Find out more about the project here.

SPARKLE ON SCHOLARSHIP

Kate Courtney is known for advocating and supporting causes she holds dear to her heart. In 2022 and for the second year running, she continued the SPARKLE ON Scholarship. With the help of her sponsors, SCOTT, Syncros, SRAM, and RockShox, and together with the National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA) of which she is an alumna, six graduating students received the Scholarship, which included equipment as well as personal mentoring from Kate. We are happy to support Kate in her causes and you can read more here.

YOUTH CYCLING DEVELOPEMENET

We are pleased to share that we are also contributing to youth cycling development and access throughout our network of distributors & subsidiaries. Racing and getting people on bikes are values that we hold close to our hearts and are integral parts of our brand’s DNA. We are promoting youth cycling development by sponsoring junior teams and young talented athletes. Some of our subsidiaries have organized summer camps, kids’ races, as well as bike schools. We are pleased to be able to contribute to the growth of youth cycling and share in the joy and values that come from them.

FAIR E-COMMERCE

Our e-commerce strategy has been focused on the importance of cementing our partnerships with our Specialty Dealers and Key Partners. By joining our fair e-commerce platform, our Specialty Dealers and Key Partners are able to share in the benefits from online transactions. By sharing the financial gains from this increased online traffic with our key retail partners, we have been better able to meet our customer’s experience needs and increase our retail partner’s customer base through "new" customer visits to their physical stores for after-sales service and support. In 2021, we rolled out this program in the USA, which brought our total fair e-commerce presence to 11 countries.

SCOTT SPORTS CODE OF CONDUCT

Ensuring that all people across our supply chain are treated fairly with respect and dignity is something that we and our customers value. We partnered with the Responsible Sports Initiative (RSI), a project of the World Federation of Sporting Goods Industry. The RSI uses a single code of conduct that all members adhere to. Our code of conduct covers social and environmental topics that are important for us and for our stakeholders. The ultimate goal is to improve the social and environmental conditions under which our products are produced and distributed. We believe that it is through close collaboration with our valued partners that we will be able to move forward.

PARTNERS

At SCOTT, we choose to work closely with partners who share a common interest in what our resource program stands for.

YOUNGONE BANGLADESH

Youngone Bangladesh produces the majority of our Softgood products. We have had a longstanding relationship with them since 1998. Youngone is a leading manufacturer of outdoor sports apparel and gear, and an example of a responsible steward of the environment and society. In 1999, Youngone started to rehabilitate 2500 acres of barren land in Chattogram Bangladesh by planting trees. To date, Youngone has planted more than 2.1 million trees and due to this effort, 18 water reservoirs have also been created. These actions have led to the return of local fauna in the Chattogram area and the reservoirs help mitigate flooding and control sediment flow. In 2003, fish were introduced into the reservoirs and they can be harvested as a food source. Youngone is also a pioneer in the employment of females in Bangladesh, offering training and career opportunities.

SAM AUSTRIA & SCOTT USA DFG

SCOTT’s first foray into the goggle market took place in 1970. Fifty years down the road, goggles are still a key product category. Using the latest innovations, technologies and designs, we are constantly pushing to produce the best products for our customers. We have two key partners for our goggles: SCOTT GmbH Austria & SCOTT USA DFG Inc. These facilities produce all our products. Being close to our design teams and located near our key markets allows us to better respond to changes in the markets. Made in the EU and USA are staples of what makes our goggles some of the best on the market.

TEN-TECH COMPOSITE

Ten-Tech Composite Corporation (TTC) is one of our key partners in producing our carbon fibre frames in Dongguan, China. We have been working with TTC since their inception in 2003 and have valued our partnership with them. As well as being a key partner for business, TTC is an exemplary partner in terms social responsibility. TTC donates energy and resources to the communities in Dongguan. They donate to local elementary schools to help them purchase material for their students and offer the opportunity to students to participate in manual practice and group activities that aim at increasing the students’ creative, manual and experimental skills. TTC also donates to a fund that promotes health activity amongst the elderly in Dongguan.

PRODUCT

We aim to maximize the sustainable nature of our products while still maintaining their high level of performance through innovation, technology and design.

At SCOTT, we are working continuously to improve our products by aiming to have better performing and designed products using the latest technologies. We have also taken a conscious step in improving the sustainability of our products.

We developed the RE-SOURCE BY SCOTT logo to make it easier for our customers to make a more conscientious decision when purchasing our products. The logo is visible on products that are made using more eco-friendly materials and fulfil certain sustainability criteria.

WHAT IS CLASSIFIED AS A RE-SOURCE BY SCOTT HARDGOODS?

Re-source by SCOTT hardgoods products are defined by the use of recycled, bio-based and/or renewable materials certified by third parties, representing a minimum of 50% more eco-responsible materials by weight. For the Fall/Winter 22/23 season, we presented three products that meet these criteria, the SCOTT Shield Recycled Goggle, the SCOTT Superguide LT 95 Ski, and the SCOTT Couloir Tour helmet.

SCOTT Cosmos Re‑source Skiboot

This first foray into using more ECO responsible materials in our ski boots has enabled us to add another product into the re-source by SCOTT family. With a mixture of biobased and recycled materials reaching 50% of the product weight, the COSMOS Re-Source is a great first step towards the future.

MORE THAN 50% ECO-CONTENT BY WEIGHT

SCOTT Recycled Shield

The SCOTT Shield Recycled goggle is our latest addition into our iconic Shield Range. This goggle represents a proof of concept and our first step into the world of circular products. Over the course of the last year, we have been collecting old SCOTT goggles that had lived beyond their useful life. We then recycled the frames into new goggle frames. The goggle strap is made from 100% recycled polyamide from Fulgar®. All the goggles’ component manufacturing and assembly is done in Europe. MORE THAN 60% ECO-CONTENT BY WEIGHT. For more on the product visit here.

SCOTT Couloir Tour

A lightweight, touring-specific winter helmet used by our most winter athletes. Designed to work with a beanie, this helmet is made with over 55% recycled material. The EPS, straps and vent plates are all made using recycled waste. This helmet keeps you safe and helps lessen our impacts on our playground.

WHAT IS CLASSIFIED AS A RE-SOURCE BY SCOTT APPAREL PRODUCT?

RE-SOURCE BY SCOTT is not only the name of our corporate sustainability program, it is also a label that we use on products that meet our strictest material sustainability criteria. The first range of products that we presented with our RE-SOURCE BY SCOTT logo is our apparel lines. For the Fall/Winter 20/21 season, we developed criteria for our Softgoods products to be considered RE-SOURCE BY SCOTT. These criteria stipulate that a product must contain either a minimum of 50% recycled content, or it must be made from 100% certified renewable materials. In addition, the product cannot contain any PFC-based durable water repellence. These criteria allow us to set a high bar as to what we believe are more eco-responsible products.

RE-SOURCE by SCOTT apparel

PFC FREE DURABLE WATER REPELLENCE

Perfluorinated and polyfluorinated compounds, also known as PFCs, are a group of fluorinated substances that have long been used for durable water repellence (DWR) in clothing and gear. The benefits they offer are many: repellence against water, oil and dirt, thermal and chemical stability while preserving breathability of the fabric to which it is applied. However, PFCs do not easily break down in nature and instead bioaccumulate in living organisms and travel up the food chain, where they can cause severe health issues for both animals and humans.

PFC-FREE IN SCOTT APPAREL

WHAT IS CLASSIFIED AS A RE-SOURCE BY SCOTT FOOTWEAR?

For the third year of our re-source program, we grew into SCOTT Footwear and are now able to offer products meeting our more sustainable product criteria. Re-source by SCOTT Footwear products are defined by the use of recycled, bio-based and/or renewable materials certified by third parties, representing a minimum of 40% more eco-responsible materials by weight. For the Spring/Summer 23 season, we presented two products that meet these criteria, the SCOTT Pursuit Explore, and the SCOTT Crus-R Boa ECO.

SCOTT PURSUIT Explore

Explore without boundaries. Featuring a 100% recycled upper and recycled EVA, the Pursuit Explore is our first product that is re-source by SCOTT Running. All aspects of the shoe are considered to create a product with the lightest footprint in both running and sustainability

SCOTT Crus-R Boa ECO

The SCOTT Sport Crus-r BOA® Eco is designed for all-day comfort. It’s a great choice for riders of all levels who seek comfortable shoes on longer rides. This shoe is durable and offers good traction on the pedals and off the bike. The Crus-r BOA® Eco is our first Re-source by SCOTT cycling shoe with more than 50% eco-content by weight.

BIO-BASED MATERIALS

In our portfolio of more eco-responsible materials, we have started to use bio-based plastics. These plastics, contrarily to conventional plastics that are made from fossil fuels, are made from biomass. In other words, organic matter. When we use bio-based plastics, the most important verification that we do is that the biomass used is not in competition with food sources. The biomass should be seen as a waste product or non-food source. A few of our products are using bio-based plastics. All of our sunglass’s collection is using partially biobased plastics for the frames. We are also using biobased materials in our Cosmos and Celeste ski boots. All of these products are using bio plastics from castor bean oil. The castor plant farming is predominantly located in India, where the crops are grown mainly in semi-arid and drought-prone territories, and thus do not compete with food crops and do not contribute to deforestation.

PLANET

We take into consideration that the earth’s resources must be used in such a way that ecosystems and future generations shouldn’t be adversely affected.

SCOTT HQ

Our new headquarters includes many pioneering technologies that are both eco-friendly and have a positive impact on working conditions. Incoming sunlight is controlled by sun-sails that close and open automatically depending on the luminosity, wind and temperature. Self-tinting electrochromic glass provides dynamic solar control, creating a pleasant glare-free indoor environment. In addition, we are the first company in Europe to use a new hybrid air-hydronic system technology which is integrated in textile panels in the ceiling – providing both energy efficient climate control and acoustic insulation. This combination of technologies creates a holistic and energy-efficient climate control system without the need for traditional air-conditioning.

Our energy is supplied from a range of different sources. 205 solar panel modules covering 355 square-meters of the roof supply electricity to the building, although this does not account for all our energy needs it does offer some energy independence from greener sources.

ATHLETE CO2 FOOTPRINT COMPENSATION

Since 2021, we have been measuring the carbon footprint of our winter sports and running athletes in order to offset them. We partnered with the Swiss company Almighty Tree whose mission is to create a cleaner environment and a healthier ecosystem. We are pleased to work with Almighty Tree in their cause as it is near to our hearts, and they work locally near to our HQ in Switzerland. Since the beginning of our collaboration, we have planted over 400 trees locally.

SUMMIT FOUNDATION VOLUNTEER DAY

Since 2021, every year our collaborators at the Head Office in Switzerland sign up to participate in a volunteer clean-up day in the mountains. These events are always eye opening in terms of the actual amount of waste that is collected but also is a great opportunity to get to give back and clean-up the playgrounds, we spend so much time enjoying. These events are organized by the SUMMIT Foundation, a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to reduce the environmental impact of human activity in high-traffic locations by proposing concrete solutions and awareness-raising methods, both to public bodies and companies.

PLASTIC FREE RIDER

Since 2021, we have been supporting Plastic Free Rider, an organization started in 2019 by Raffaele and Sara. Plastic Free Riders are riders who love to travel free. Free as only the bicycle makes them feel, and free from the pollution found on roads and paths. Those who love cycling know it: even on the roads that offer the most breath-taking views, if you look down, you come across abandoned waste, unmistakable traces of the passage of careless humans. Every year, Plastic Free Rider sets out on ambitious expeditions to clean the roads that they ride along. In 2022, they set out with the mission to cycle from the north of Italy to Budapest in Hungary. With a trolley attached to the bike, armed with telescopic pliers, they collected as much waste as possible, mainly plastic, but also cans, glass, and other waste and then sorted them into collection bins.

EOG SUSTAINABILITY CHARTER

As members of the European Outdoor Group (EOG), we’ve signed their Sustainability Charter. The Charter is an initiative to align all members of the Outdoor Industry in order to recognise the importance of moving together in making the industry a leader in environmental and social stewardship. The Charter has three stages that increase in commitment towards sustainability topics. This commitment is our first official stand for being a more responsible member of society but will be followed by many more as we look forward to improving our practices and products.

TOXICOLOGY TESTING

We do our due diligence by collecting raw material test reports and/or label certificates from our suppliers. We also organize yearly toxicology testing campaigns following the strictest toxicology regulations. Our Restricted Substances List allows us to conduct risk analysis and test accordingly, for example for materials in prolonged contact with the skin. Based on the data gathered during the testing campaign we can monitor more closely specific materials or products to ensure we are reducing any harmful chemicals detected with an aim of avoiding them all together. We also work closely with our suppliers to keep each other up to date and exchange learnings regarding the latest regulations targeting materials and processes. Our efforts are constantly expanding to limit the products’ impact on the environment.
