She's Out There

From Stockholm to Sweet Single-Track Trails

Season 2 - Episode 2

Sporty chic style, Fika and Vikings may come to mind when you think of the Stockholm, but mountain biking, probably not. Think again. The trails resting on the doorstep of the city weaving through the woods to lakes and wetlands leave little to be desired. Even so, many city dwellers find it challenging to make the leap from the spin studio to the trail. We caught up with local riders, racers, and coaches who are helping people make the transition.

Jessica Claren

“I started teaching indoor cycling in 1999, and I found my way out in 2014. What I see cool now is that people find the same adventure that I have been through, going from indoor to outdoor.”

- words by Jessica Claren

Jessica, what’s your history with cycling?

I have taught indoor cycling since it arrived in Stockholm. My boyfriend always nagged me to try riding outdoors but when he finally did, I hated it, wanted to sell the bike and break up… It wasn’t until an assignment together with a few other bloggers in Sweden that I was “challenged” to start in the popular Swedish Cykelvasan race that I got the bug. From then on, I’ve been in love.

I wanted to make a difference and create a positive and welcoming platform for all riders, no matter gender or skills level.

Why did you start the SheRides Community?

I found it very hard to get into the sport. There were many obstacles I faced as I tried to make the transition from an indoor instructor to a trail rider. I wanted to make a difference and create a positive and welcoming platform for all riders, no matter your gender or skill level.

The perfect day in Stockholm is to meet the city when it's not awake yet.

What is the goal of the SheRides Community?

We want to create possibilities around Scandinavia to get more girls and boys outside on their bikes. We are building a platform for everyone, no matter what your goals are.

Hanna Näslund

“My mother is 60 years old, and four years ago, I never thought I was going to see her on a bike, but thanks to the community up north where she lives, she is now a passionate cyclist.”

- words by Hanna Näslund

What is important about going mountain biking for you?

The freedom, the stillness, and the sound of nature. I love the thrill, the wind in my face and the way my soul comes more alive after time spent on the bike.

Elna Dahlstrand

“Maybe mountain biking can look scary at times. You see photos on Instagram, where people ride very tricky paths - it's steep uphill or downhill, but you are the one who decides how hard mountain biking can be.”

- words by Elna Dahlstrand

It’s a cool thing to follow people's journeys from indoor to outdoor and to see them realize that they are strong enough.
