Consumer Reports Tests Bicycle Helmets

14 May 2015

The noted consumer protection magazine Consumer Reports recently tested a range of bicycle helmets. The Scott ARX Plus was included in the test, a summary of which you can view here.

Consumer Reports’ article is very clear about the benefits of wearing a helmet while riding a bike. Riders not wearing helmets represent an overwhelming majority of fatalities among those involved in accidents. And as the article shows, there are plenty of affordable helmets that are comfortable to wear while riding.

The Consumer Reports helmet rating process included a battery of tests, including an impact test, a test of chin strap strength, and a subjective evaluation of each helmet’s ventilation, weight, and fit adjustment. During the impact test, an electronic sensor in a dummy metal head to measure the force potentially transmitted during an accident. The testing was comprehensive and similar in nature to that conducted by the CPSC. Final ratings were based on test results and include recommendations based on price.

Consumer Reports performs unbiased, independent product testing and accepts no advertising. Since 1936, it’s been considered one of the most reliable and unbiased consumer protection publishers in the USA.
