    MAHLE VS TQ

For the Electric Road and Gravel bikes, we have fitted them with drive units from industry market leaders: Mahle and TQ. The low weight of the two systems keeps the bike's steering agile and secure and ensures a riding feeling close to that of an acoustic bike. In terms of visual differences, one is hub-drive and one is mid-drive.

However, there's more to distinguish them when it comes to how the bike feels and handles.

    MAHLE X20

    HUB-DRIVE

    MAHLE

SCOTT uses two Mahle drive units, the X35 and the newer X20. Both are hub-based and minimalist for Sportive riders who still want the natural look and riding feel. The Mahle X20 drive unit is quiet and completely dragless. The transition between support and just you is smooth, there's no unnatural push in-between (if you ride above the motor support speed), it's unintrusive and easy. The system learns and adapts its responses and assistance to your particular riding style.

    TQ HPR50

    MID-DRIVE

    TQ HPR50

The TQ HPR50 motor utilizes a harmonic pin ring technology, which enables the motor to run smoothly, silently and close to dragless. The placement of the motor between the cranks keeps the gravity low and centred, which ensures a balanced and confidence-inspiring bike.

Thanks to this technology, the pedalling feeling stays natural and the assistance is optimized based on the rider's performance and input. The Solace eRIDE models feature a torque and cadence sensor in the bottom bracket, which allows you to keep track of your power input and watts.

    WHAT ABOUT RANGE?

When talking about E-Bikes, the discussion always comes back to range: how far can you go on a single charge? It's a natural question as you need to know this when planning bigger rides. The question might seem easy but there's no simple answer. This is because the range is dependent on multiple factors besides the size of the battery. These factors change the expected range for every rider, and for every ride.

A rider's fitness level has been found to be one of the greatest influencing factors on an E-Bike's estimated range. How come? Because with a higher fitness level, the rider can reach a speed of above 25kph faster and stay there for longer. This saves on battery as the usage of assistance is minimized. Fitness level may also influence which assistance mode is chosen and for how long the rider is assisted.

The terrain on which you're using the E-Bike also affects the range. Depending on the surface of the road, the elevation gain and if the riding conditions allow for riding above 25kph or require the drive unit to turn on and off intermittently, the battery will be affected differently.

SCOTT eROAD/eGRAVEL bikes have several assistance modes. Each mode has a different impact on the battery and the range, so you need to choose wisely if you want to go for longer rides. As Mahle and TQ offer a great riding experience even without assistance, you can ride with the assistance turned off and save the battery for the really steep climbs, or for when you're really tired.

Headwinds, heavy rain or burning sun — the weather doesn't only affect the riding conditions but also your mood. And your mood and form on the day undoubtedly affect the range. If the weather conditions are bad and you still managed to get out on the bike, kudos to you! But eventually those soaking wet bib-shorts of yours will have you pretty much done with the ride and the assistance mode kicks up a notch to get you home. This is why there cannot be a definitive stated range, as every day presents new conditions, moods and challenges which all affect the range.

SO, HOW FAR CAN I GO?

As explained above, it is impossible to give a definitive answer on an E-Bike's range, however, we can offer some guidance. The estimated ranges of SCOTT eRoad and eGravel bikes vary due to their different drive units, set-ups and intended uses.

The Addict RC eRIDE is our lightweight, race-oriented eROAD bike. It has a 236Wh battery and a low watt consumption per kilometer and per meter of elevation gain. This give it an estimated range of 145km with 2300m of elevation. With a range extender of +171Wh, you can go even further and higher.

The Solace eRIDE has a larger battery of 360Wh and is designed with comfort in mind, hence it is slightly less aero. This makes the watt consumption slightly higher, but still results in an estimated range of 165km and 2600m of elevation, which can be extended with a range extender of +160Wh.

The Solace Gravel eRIDE has a battery of 360Wh. However, riding on gravel shortens the range due to the riding conditions and riding style. Despite this, the Solace Gravel eRIDE has a a generous estimated range of 80km with 1600m of elevation, which can be extended with a range extender of +160Wh.

Just keep in mind, range is ultimately unique to the rider and the ride. The estimated ranges should only be seen as guidelines rather than hard facts. Once you get to know your E-Bike, you'll know how far it can take you. Luckily, SCOTT eROAD and eGRAVEL bikes ride just as well without the assistance, so you'll never find yourself stranded on a ride — there's always a way home.
